Inside the World of Professional Cycling: Navigating Financial Demands and Training Strategies

Wellness, Wealth & Mindset Weekly (#024)

Becoming a professional cyclist is a dream for many sports enthusiasts. The allure of competing at the highest level, traversing picturesque landscapes, and the sense of achievement that comes with crossing the finish line are just a few of the rewards. However, the journey to becoming a pro cyclist has its challenges.

In this week's blog, I have taken what I have seen as some of the most valuable pieces from my interview with Pro Cyclist Tom Fitzpatrick. He was kind enough to lend me his time a few months ago and you can now access the full interview within my podcast, The Neil Damerell Show (link below)

We will delve into the financial demands of the sport and explore the training strategies employed by athletes to reach the pinnacle of their cycling careers. here are just a few highlights.

Financial Considerations:

Financing a career in professional cycling is no small feat. As our featured cyclist shared, the landscape has evolved over the years, with changes in salaries and sponsorship opportunities. The distinction between amateur and professional levels can be blurry, and riders often find themselves in a transitional phase known as the Continental level. While some receive handsome salaries, others may have to rely on their own funds or minimal support from their teams. It is a delicate balance, requiring both personal resourcefulness and support from sponsors and supporters who believe in the cyclist's potential.

Training as the Foundation:

Training lies at the core of every professional cyclist's success. While some athletes work with dedicated coaches, our cyclist has taken the path of self-coaching. This approach has its advantages, such as developing a deep understanding of training principles and techniques. However, it also presents challenges, as self-imposed pressure and guilt can creep in when rest days are needed. Nevertheless, the cyclist has learned valuable lessons along the way and has actively sought advice from various sources, continually refining their training methods.

Striking a balance:

For our cyclists, a significant focus of their training regimen is built upon the foundation of long, endurance-based rides. Often referred to as "giant miles," these extended periods of zone two work have proven effective for their overall performance, even contributing to improvements in sprinting abilities. However, it is essential to note that training methods are highly individual, and what works for one rider may not yield the same results for another. Some athletes thrive on high-intensity, short-duration workouts, while others benefit from increased volume. Finding the right balance between intensity and volume is crucial to optimize performance and prevent burnout.

Harnessing Technology:

The modern era of cycling training is intertwined with technology. Power meters and heart rate monitors have become indispensable tools, allowing riders to measure and track their efforts with precision. By analyzing training data, athletes can identify trends, spot areas of improvement, and adjust their training accordingly. Our cyclist has embraced this aspect of training, staying up-to-date with the latest training metrics and utilizing technology to maximize their potential.

Conclusion:

The journey to becoming a professional cyclist is a remarkable endeavour that requires determination, financial management, and a well-crafted training strategy. While financial demands can be daunting, riders navigate this aspect through sponsorships, personal investments, and seeking opportunities in different regions. Training forms the bedrock of success, with each cyclist finding their unique approach. Whether it's through self-coaching or working with dedicated coaches, training methods are honed to optimize performance and adapt to individual strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the world of professional cycling is a captivating one, where athletes strive for excellence, overcome challenges, and push the boundaries of their abilities on two wheels.
